Oil rigging operations require a weight indicator system to monitor the tension on the drill string and the load in the borehole. It allows drillers to ensure that their downhole equipment is safe and mitigate any operational inefficiencies. Here’re three features of a weight indicator system that you should know.

Application

Various types of weight indicator systems are utilized for different industrial applications. Weight indicators are used in several applications like tool protection, floor block, drilling maintenance, intervention and inspection. At the same time, the type of weight indicator system will depend on the load or tension. For instance, bulk tank weight indicators can measure heavy loads up to 450,000 pounds and ideal for weighing mud and cement, while midget weight indicators can weigh up to 25,000 pounds.

 An analog gauge

Type Of Gauge Readout

A gauge displays the hydraulic pressure or weight of the load carried by the hose. The two main types of gauge are analog and digital/electronic gauges. This feature will greatly depend on factors like variances in weight changes and external environments. Electronic gauges are slightly more accurate as they can show the exact measurement on the backlit OLED display. Furthermore, electronic gauges are resistant to high vibration environments as vibration can interfere with the needle indicators of analog gauges. However, analog gauges don’t require a power supply and can show any variances in weight instantly.

Number of Lines Strung

The hydraulic pressure from the tension on the drill string is measured and displayed on the indicator. However, the weight includes the tension on the wire rope and traveling blocks. For accurate readings, weight indicator systems can be attached to different drill lines such as coil tubing string, slick line string, or drill string in the downhole. This nifty feature allows the driller to adjust the rotating and hanging off bottom weight. Most weight indicators have a secondary dial that can be set to zero so that it takes weight away from the primary dial, allowing the driller to read the actual weight on the drill bit
