Mud pump pressure gauges are specialized oilfield equipment, used majorly in oil drilling companies. Oil rig companies need to monitor the pressure of mud while drilling into the site, and pressure gauges help during such operating procedures.
If the pressure is low, it indicates a loose joint, damaged drill string, or formation breakdown. If the pressure is high, the mud density or viscosity may have increased. An operational mud pressure gauge can prevent circulation problems for drillers.
The drilling rigs also require lubrication with the help of drilling muds/fluids to keep the pressure under control. Drilling muds and fluids are synthetic chemical compounds used to cool the drill bit, clean the borehole bottom, and improve the machinery’s function.
But most importantly, they offset the pressure of rock formations and hydrocarbons, to maintain optimal pressure in the rig. This affects the readings you see on the mud pressure gauge.
There are three varieties of mud pump pressure gauges that we’ll talk about.
Type F
- This comes with a dial case diameter of 4-7/8 inches and a height of 9-7/8 inches.
- It measures pressure readings within the range: 0 – 20,000 psi.
- It measures temperature within the range: -50 to +65 Celsius degree(-50F to +150F)
- The standard end connection in Type F is a 2-inch NPT threaded male, and 1-inch NPT threaded female connection.
- This gauge indicates the pressure of substances, including mud, water, and oil, during the drilling operation.
Type D
- This gauge comes with a dial case diameter of 7-5/8 inches, and a height of 14-3/4 inches.
- It can calculate pressure within the range: 0 – 6,000 psi (1000 psi, 3000 psi, 5000 psi, 6000 psi)
- It can also measure a temperature range of -50 to +65 Celsius degree (-50F to +150F).
- The standard end connection of this gauge is a 2-inch NPT female threaded connection.
Model 8
- The Model 8 offers a standard end connection with a 1-inch line pipe threaded female connection, and a 2-inch line pipe threaded male connection.
- The dimensions of this mud pump pressure gauge are an 8-1/8 inch diameter dial case and 13-1/4 inch height
- It can measure a pressure range of 0 – 6,000 psi and 0 – 10,000 psi.
- It can give temperature readings between -50 to +65 Celsius degree (-50F to +150F)
- The large 6-inch dial face is made with a shock-proof acrylic lens that can resist impact damage.
- It can also offer dual face pressure readings in PSI/kg/cm2, kPa / PSI, and Bars / PSI.
