Cables are essential tools to power up equipment and other systems and are prone to extreme weather, harsh environments, and wear and tear. Therefore they need to be built for durability and reliability. Over-molding is a new technology that improves the coating of an existing cable using a mold injecting machine. The blog will explain the over-molding process, its advantages and how you can customize your over-molded cables.
What Is Cable Over-Molding?
Cable over-molding is the process of injecting a molding material to merge cable or connectors into a single piece. A mold injecting machine injects a hot mold resin into the cable assembly under extremely high pressure. The material fills up in the mold where it’s left to cool down and solidify. Once the material is cooled down, it will take the shape of the mold, completely seal the cable and remove the mold. You can speed up the cooling process by circulating it in cold water. The final product is a single over-molded cable encapsulated in the over-molded cable assembly.
Advantages Of Over-Molded Cables
Over-molded cables offer a multitude of benefits and are as follows:
- It is resistant against external forces such as high vibrations, friction and extreme temperatures
- The encapsulating seal makes the internal components tamperproof
- It eliminates the need for metal backshells
- It has the ability to work in abrasive environments for longer periods, thus extending its lifetime
- It has increased tensile strength and reduced mechanical cable strain
- An IP67 rated material can resist water, moisture, mud and oil
- It gives the cable an aesthetic appeal
How Can You Customize Your Over-Molded Cables?
Over-molded cables have a variety of customization options based on your preferences. You can choose multiple coating materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and more. Furthermore, the material can be color-coded with a corporate logo, allowing you to match it with your brand identity. You can add visual cues and indicators for entry and exit points to make the cables more user-friendly for installation and thus less susceptible to human error.
