Despite their incredible strength and ability to displace water, water pumps often run into problems when solids, such as trash and debris, are added to the mix.

Trash pumps are engineered to separate solids from liquids, while getting rid of water simultaneously. Their functionality varies depending on the type of pump you have; smaller submersible trash pumps are designed for limited use in homes.

On the other hand, industrial trailer-mounted trash pumps are powerful pieces of machinery that can pump up to 3,000 gallons per minute and lift water over 150 feet high. These turbo-powered engines are ideal for use on construction sites, sewer bypass projects, mining work, and drilling rig operations.

However, despite the size and tenacity of these trash pumps, continuous wear and tear can lead to broken or malfunctioning parts. While buying a new pump can get rid of the issue, it isn’t always economically feasible.

To extend the life of your trash pump, you need to know about these pump parts so you can identify and replace them as needed.

1. Impellers

The impeller draws water into the pump by creating a vacuum. Processing large amounts of trash or debris can damage the impeller over time, in which case, you’ll have to replace it. Pumping corrosive material, gasoline, and even water at a high temperature can also cause irreparable damage.

2. Volutes

The volute ensures a controlled discharge of fluid. The volute casing creates a curved tunnel, where the cross-sectional area increases toward the pump outlet. Any pressure inconsistencies can create long-term problems. If you notice this, you need to have it looked at.

3. Wear Rings

Wear rings are used to seal any openings in the inlet between the impeller and the pump casing. The main goal is to decrease leakage loss around the impeller. Wear rings sometimes lock up or wear down due to particulate build-up, causing maintenance issues.

Additionally, galling can also cause the pump to lock up. This is more problematic in stainless steel rings, which is why we only offer high-quality brass rings.

4. Pump Stands

Pump stands are a necessity for oilfield operators, as they keep your pump stand sturdy and protected against any unwanted gusher damage. By mounting your pump on a secure stand, it remains protected against adverse environmental damage too.
